CAMLY MACULLAGH

Location

Camly Macullagh is a townland of 1029 statute acres 2 rood and 29 perches about two miles south of Newtownhamilton. It is bounded on the north by Carrickacullion and Ballintemple (Ballymore Parish), on the east by Cavanakill (Ballymore Parish) and Carrickrovaddy, on the south by Camly Ball and on the west by Tullyvallen. In the Tithe Applotment Books of 1825 the total area of the townland (Camoly McCullough) is recorded as 522 acres, 3 rood sand 10 perches (Plantation Irish measure.)

Name of townland

Camla, "A crooked hill." Followed by a surname - here Macullagh - a former owner of the townland. An alternative suggested by Fr. Murray is Cam Liath "A grey bend". (1)

Valuation

Although the decimalisation of the currency was introduced only in 1971, all of the valuations in the following table have been converted from £sd for convenience.

Year 1837 1851 1864 1871 1881 1891 1901 1911 1926 1935 1952 1957 1974
Valuation £371.15 £501.00 £615.85 £609.10 £622.10 £593.60 £594.60 £578.60 £562.85 £622.60 £616.35 £621.10 £783.60

The 1837 Townland Valuation recorded only houses worth £5 or more a year. There were two such houses in the townland -

  • Robert Thompson, and
  • Hugh Patterson

Griffiths Valuation records the owner of the land (with the exception of about 26 acres) as the Representatives of John Reid.

Census of Ireland 1901

The Census enumerated 195 people in 46 households; a ratio of 4.2 people per household. The households occupied a total of 177 rooms; a ratio of 3.8 rooms per household and 1.1 people per room. One of the households had 9 rooms, four had 6 rooms, two had 5 rooms, 25 had 4 rooms, seven had 3 rooms, six had two rooms and one had one room. Only one of the houses was thatched.

Native Irish Speakers

Of the 46 households enumerated in the Census, one contained two native Irish speakers. Since theirs was the last generation to have been born into a predominantly Irish speaking environment, their names, occupations and ages are recorded here. Both were born in Co. Armagh -

  • David Craig, farmer, property owner and JP, 48
  • James McCreesh, farm servant to David Craig, 35

Population Decline

The following table sets out the number of houses and population enumerated in the townland in each of the 11 Censuses held between 1841 and 1951.

  1841 1851 1861 1871 1881 1891 1901 1911 1926 1937 1951
Houses 101 85 76 64 58 49 46 39 37 39 30
People 528 435 364 354 312 237 195 183 134 97 97
People per household 5.2 5.1 4.8 5.5 5.4 4.8 4.2 4.7 3.6 2.5 3.2

In the period of 110 years, the number of households dropped by 70.3% and the population by 81.6%.

Names of House and land Holders (2)

The following table sets out, in alphabetical order, the names of those who owned or rented houses and land in the townland at the time the official valuation record or population census was compiled.
