TOWNLANDS OF NEWTOWNHAMILTON

CARRICKROVADDY

(DORSEY MACDONALD)


Location

Carrickrovaddy is a townland of 579 statute acres 1 rood and 20 perches about three miles southeast of Newtownhamilton. It is bounded on the north by Cavanakill (Ballymore Parish), on the east by Tullyogallaghan and Dorsey Hearty, on the south and south-west by Dorsey Mullaghglass and on the west by Camly ball and Camly Macullagh. In the Tithe Applotment Books of 1825 the total area of Cargarovaddy is shown as 503 acres, and 28 perches (Plantation Irish measure),

Name of townland

Carraig an Chuillin "The dog's red rocks" (1).

In the 1766 Census of Creggan the townland is called "Corgaghrovaddy" thereafter "Dorsey MacDonald or Carrickrovaddy"

Valuation

Although the decimalisation of the currency was introduced only in 1971, all of the valuations in the following table have been converted from £sd for convenience.

The 1837 Townland Valuation recorded only houses worth £5 or more a year. There were no houses of this valuation in the townland.

Griffiths Valuation records the owner of the land as Peter Murphy.

Census of Ireland 1901

The Census enumerated 119 people in 28 households; a ratio of 4.3 people per household. The households occupied a total of 81 rooms; a ratio of 2.9 rooms per household and 1.5 people per room. One of the households had 6 rooms, two had 5 rooms, one had 4 rooms, 14 had 3 rooms, nine had two rooms and one had one room. Seven of the houses were thatched.

Native Irish Speakers

There was one native Irish speaker - Bernard Luckey, Agricultural labourer, 31, born in Co. Armagh.
