TOWNLANDS OF NEWTOWNHAMILTON

CORTAMLET


Location

Cortamlet is a townland of 760 statute acres 2 roods and 34 perches about three miles west of Newtownhamilton. It is bounded on the north by Armaghbreague (Keady Parish), on the north-east by Tullyvallen, on the south-east and south by Altnamackan and on the west by Muckno Parish in County Monaghan. In the Tithe Applotment Books of 1825 its total area is shown as 396 acres, 3 roods and 21 perches (Plantation Irish measure)

Name of townland

Corr Tamhlachta "The round hill of the mass grave" (1).

Valuation

Although the decimalisation of the currency was introduced only in 1971, all of the valuations in the following table have been converted from £sd for convenience.

The 1837 Townland Valuation recorded only houses worth £5 or more a year. There were four such dwellings in the townland -

  • Andrew Clarke Jun. - House and offices
  • Andrew Clarke Sen. - House and Offices
  • Hugh Garmany - House, corn mill and offices
  • Andrew Clark - House and flax mill

Census of Ireland 1901

The Census enumerated 137 people in 30 households; a ratio of 4.6 people per household. The households occupied a total of 146 rooms; a ratio of 4.9 rooms per household and 0.9 people per room. Nine of the households had 6 rooms, three had 5 rooms, fourteen had 4 rooms, three had 3 rooms and one had two room. Three of the houses were thatched.

Native Irish Speakers

One of the households had four native Irish Speakers. All had been born in County Monaghan. They were -

  • Thomas McKee, farmer, aged 32
  • Mary Ann McKee, sister of Thomas, farmers daughter, 36
  • Margaret McKee, sister of Thomas, farmers daughter, 34
  • Robert Mckee, brother of Thomas, farmer, 30

Population Decline
