TOWNLANDS OF NEWTOWNHAMILTON

KILTYBANE or LISLEITRIM


Location

Kiltybane is a townland of 447 statute acres, 3 roods and 37 perches about two miles west of Cullyhanna. It is bounded on the north by Skerriff Tichburn, on the east by Skerriff Trueman, Cullyhanna Little and Sheetrim (both Creggan Parish), on the south by Annaghmare (in Creggan Parish), and on the west by Mullaghduff and Ballynarea. In the Tithe Applotment Books of 1825 the total acreage is shown as 213 acrea, 1 rood and 19 perches (Plantation Irish measure).

Valuation

Although the decimalisation of the currency was introduced only in 1971, all of the valuations in the following table have been converted from £sd for convenience.

The 1837 Townland Valuation recorded only houses worth £5 or more a year. There was one such house in the townland -

  • Peter Donaghy

Griffiths Valuation records the owner of the land, with the exception of 61 acres owned by Rev. Joseph Donaldson, as Walter McGeough Bond.

Census of Ireland 1901

The Census enumerated 87 people in 26 households; a ratio of 3.3 people per household. The households occupied a total of 68 rooms; a ratio of 2.6 rooms per household and 1.3 people per room. One of the households had five rooms, seven had four rooms, one had 3 rooms, fifteen had 2 rooms and two had one room. Thirteen of the houses were thatched.

Native Irish Speakers

Three of the households each contained one native Irish speaker. All had been born in Co. Armagh. They were -

  • Catherine Garvey, farmer, 60
  • Sarah Carraher, farmer, widow, 60
  • Hugh McMahon, farmer, 47

In the period of 110 years, the number of households dropped by 68.3% and the population by 77.9%.
