Until late in the nineteenth century and into the first two decades of the twentieth, most of the land in Ireland was owned by landlords, many of whom did not live in Ireland. Following several decades of land agitation, a series of Land Acts laid the framework for the transfer of the land, through assisted purchase, to the former tenants. This table lists the landlords of newtownhamilton Parish in 1864. Many had land in adjacent parishes as well. |
