MULLAGHDUFF


Location

Mullaghduff is a townland of 331 statute acres, 2 roods and 24 perches about four miles west of Cullyhanna. It is bounded on the north by Ballynarea, on the east by Kiltybane on the south by Drumlougher, and on the west by Muckno Parish in Co. Monaghan. In the Tithe Applotment Books of 1825 the total area of the townland is shown as 186 acres, 2 roods and 20 perches (Plantation Irish measure).

Valuation

Although the decimalisation of the currency was introduced only in 1971, all of the valuations in the following table have been converted from £sd for convenience.

The 1837 Townland Valuation recorded only houses worth £5 or more a year. There were no houses of that valuation in the townland.

Griffiths Valuation records the owner of the land as Walter McGeough Bond.

Census of Ireland 1901

The Census enumerated 63 people in 14 households; a ratio of 4.5 people per household. The households occupied a total of 63 rooms; a ratio of 4.5 rooms per household and 1 people per room. One of the households had 8 rooms, four had six rooms, five had four rooms, three had 3 rooms, and one had two rooms. Four of the houses were thatched.

Native Irish Speakers

One of the households contained a native Irish speaker. He was James McArdle, farmer, 41, born in Co. Monaghan
