TOWNLANDS OF NEWTOWNHAMILTON

TULLYOGALLAGHAN

Location

Tullyogallaghan is a townland of 501 statute acres, 1 rood and 3 perches about three miles south-east of Newtownhamilton. It is bounded on the north by Outlecken (Ballymore Parish), on the east by Loughgilly Parish, on the south by Ummerinvore and Dorsey Hearty and on the east by Carrickrovaddy. In the Tithe Applotment Books of 1825 the total area of the townland is shown as 207 acres, 3 roods and 7 perches (Plantation Irish measure)

Name of townland

Tullach Uí Cheallacháin, "O'Callaghan's hill" (1).

In the 1766 Census of Creggan the townland is called 'Tollygallaghan', thereafter 'Tullyogallaghan'.

Valuation

Although the decimalisation of the currency was introduced only in 1971, all of the valuations in the following table have been converted from £sd for convenience.

The 1837 Townland Valuation recorded only houses worth £5 or more a year. There were no houses of that valuation in the townland.

Griffiths Valuation records the owner of the land as Walter McGeough Bond.

Census of Ireland 1901

The Census enumerated 97 people in 22 households, a ratio of 4.4 people per household. The households occupied a total of 49 rooms; a ratio of 2.2 rooms per household and 2 people per room. One of the households occupied 4 rooms, four occupied 3 rooms, sixteen occupied 2 rooms and one occupied a single room.

Native Irish Speakers

There was one native Irish speakers; Owen McCreesh, farmer, 70, born Co Armagh.
