TOWNLANDS OF NEWTOWNHAMILTON

The townland of Tullyvallen contains the town of Newtownhamilton. Its total area of 4655 statute acres, 3 roods and 4 perches makes it the second largest townland in Ireland. It is bounded on the north by Armaghbreague (Lisnadill Parish), on the east by Ballintemple (Ballymore Parish), Carrickacullion, Camly Macullagh and Tullyvallen Hamilton East, on the south by Tullyvallen Tipping West, Tullyvallen Hamilton West, Cullyhanna Big (Parish of Creggan) and Skerriff Trueman, and on the west by Skerriff Tichburn, Altnamackan and Cortamlet.

Note

There are currently six townlands with the name Tullyvallen. Five are identified by former landlord's names viz. Hamilton, Tipping and Macullagh. Hamilton and Tipping are further divided into East and West. The total acreage is just over 5,570. It is probable that it was a single entity until it was divided to identify the different landlords. In the Tithe Applotment Books of 1825 there were only two divisions - Tullyvallen Hamilton (2,386 acres, 1 rood, 11 perches) and Tullyvallen Tipping (458 acres, 26 perches) - both in Plantation Irish measures.

Name of townland Tullach Álainn, "the beautiful hill"; or Tullach Uí Mhealláin, "Mallon's hill"⁽¹⁾.

Valuation

Although the decimalisation of the currency was introduced only in 1971, all of the valuations in the following table have been converted from £sd for convenience.

The 1837 Townland Valuation recorded only houses worth £5 or more a year. There were 27 such houses listed in the townland (as 'Country Houses').

Griffiths Valuation records a large number of individual landowners in the townland. The principal landowners were Rev. Alex H. Synge and Henry McFerran.

Census of Ireland 1901

The Census enumerated 821 people in 195 households; a ratio of 4.2 people per household. The households occupied a total of 607 rooms; a ratio of 3.1 rooms per household and 1.4 people per room.

In the 1830 Tithe Applotment Book there is a single townland - Tullyvallen Hamilton. The division into separate parts are first recorded in the 1837 Townland Valuation.
