TOWNLANDS OF NEWTOWNHAMILTON

TULLYVALLEN MACULLAGH

Location

Tullyvallen Macullagh is a townland of 255 statute acres and 20 perches half a mile north of Cullyhanna. It is bounded on the north by Tullyvallen Tipping West, on the east by Tullyvallen Tipping East, on the south by Tullynavall and on the by Cullyhanna Big.

Valuation

Although the decimalisation of the currency was introduced only in 1971, all of the valuations in the following table have been converted from £sd for convenience.

Census of Ireland 1901

The Census enumerated 52 people in 14 households; a ratio of 3.7 people per household. The households occupied a total of 31 rooms; a ratio of 2.2 rooms per household and 1.7 people per room. One of the households had 4 rooms, two had 3 rooms, ten had 2 rooms and one had 1 room. Six one of the houses were thatched.

Native Irish Speakers

Two of the households had one native Irish speakers each. Both were born in Co. Armagh -

  • Michael McIlduff, farmer, 74
  • Catherine McGahan, farmer, 60

Population Decline

In the period of 110 years, the number of households dropped by 30.7% and the population by 55.8%. However, the population actually increased in the post-famine years, and only stated to decline in the 1860s.
