Here are some of the attractions of the South Armagh countryside that inspired the Cardinal's love of people, country and language in his formative years. Apart from the beauty of its natural features: hills, lakes, mountains, rivers and streams - the land is scattered with the remnants of ancient human occupation. Humans have inhabited these hills and valleys for many thousands of years. They lived, loved, laughed and fought all over the region, much of which was bog and ancient forest and scrubland for most of of its existence since the ice retreated some eleven thousand years ago.
